The importance of leading from the front

6 December 2011

Mount Kenya guidesThere’s no room for hypocrisy in the Corps. The importance of leading from the front is instilled into every aspect of our day, right from the beginning. Whatever a Drill Instructor demanded of us, he demonstrated first by doing it himself.

When I was doing my job as a Marine, I always took on the hardest jobs myself. I NEVER wanted my men to think I couldn’t do whatever was necessary to get the job done. I set the tone. I was the example.

Of course, in all fairness, that DaVinci part of me couldn’t take the boredom of NOT being in the front. The more exciting the event, the more likely it’d be to see me at the head of it.

This way of leading is still in everything I do to this day. Only the teams and the missions have changed.

You’ll find I only share what I know works based on my personal experience

There are a few areas that I haven’t maxed out yet. But I have mentors who are training me or have trained me in the past who I know can take you to the top levels in these fields I have yet to conquer. I’ll get you to them if it becomes necessary.

In this case, my endorsement is just as important as my direct advice. I know when to say “when.” You need to trust that I’ll give you my all and be smart enough and ego-less enough to send you on to better sources of help, should events of the day call for it.

Once you’ve mastered whatever these people have taught you, I’ll consider it a win for us both. When you do well, I am happy. This would be more of me slingshotting you ahead. I’ll pull you from behind me and throw you out in front of me. I don’t care how we get you there as long as we get you there.

But the key is to remember I am never going to hand you theory. I have had enough of that fed to me in my own attempts to grow to last me a lifetime. I now give what I would expect to receive: solid advice based in real results and an honesty that avoids hording clients.

I seriously want you to become a star in whatever online endeavor you’ve chosen to pursue. Nothing makes the teacher look better than turning out successful students. You’re going to do the same for someone one day with what you share.
